BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The American Red Cross said it has closed the shelter for those displaced in an apartment fire because they all found new places to live.

The BREC North Street Park gym was converted to a shelter after the Turner Plaza Apartment complex caught fire Wednesday and left many residents, some of them elderly or disabled, without a place to stay.

Red Cross volunteers provided food, clothing, health services and more for 20 victims. Officials said nine people stayed at the shelter Wednesday night.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it was called out to a three-alarm fire at the complex around 1:30 p.m. It is located on North Street in downtown Baton Rouge.

Investigators said they believe the most likely cause of the fire is a heater that was located in the apartment where the fire started.

A spokesman for BRFD said one person, who was inside that apartment, was taken for treatment, but there are no other injuries.

The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging has a senior center at the site. The complex is operated by the East Baton Rouge Housing Authority.

The Council on Aging is collecting new and gently used household items, personal care items and clothing for residents. Donated items may be dropped off at the EBR Council on Aging's main location at 5790 Florida Boulevard.

Officials said they have been receiving lots of donations for the victims, but more are needed.
