DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A train slammed into an 18-wheeler in Decatur Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on Poole Valley Road, west of Highway 31, around 12:14 p.m.

Police said the truck driver, James Benjamin Bethea, had gotten his semi-truck and trailer stuck on the CSX track and could not get it off. The trailer was loaded with a late model Nissan Cube. Before Bethea could get the trailer disconnected, the train came into view.

Officers said Bethea and the passenger were able to get out of the truck before the train smashed into the trailer, carrying it about 500 yards. The Nissan Cube was knocked off, and the truck separated from the trailer.

The car the trailer was hauling was destroyed, but both people were uninjured. Police said Bethea will not face any charges.
