BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Snow can't stop the Southeast's largest kidney transplant chain at UAB.

Last week's snowstorm did not deter the transplant team from continuing the largest non-directed donor chain ever performed at a single center in the Southeast.

A non-directed donor is someone who is committed to being a living kidney donor but does not have an intended recipient.

Many of the recipients and donors braved icy roads to reach UAB. The hospital staff spent three days and nights in the hospital to ensure the success of the chain and give the gift of life.

One of the recipients is 15-year-old Ryane Burns.

"It's amazing you can't explain it, it's like God's gift. You pray and pray and pray and you start questioning after a period of time and all of a sudden God answers your prayers," Ryane's father, James, said.

Thanks to the chain, 13 patients now have a new lease on life.
