BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

We all learned last week, we should be ready for a weather emergency at any time. Winter snow storms, ice, sleet, tornados, floods… Oh my!

Weather can change at any time and not always for the better. We hear of reports of people getting stuck in their cars or having to walk to the nearest shelter. No one wants that, but it can be a little easier if you're prepared.

The American Red Cross says there are a few things that can help you cope, should you get stuck when nature turns nasty. Always carry a little extra cash and make sure your gas tank is full and have a kit filled with basic supplies, such as:

-a blanket

-warm clothes and comfortable shoes

-charger for your cell phone

-bottle of water and non-perishable food.

-sand or non-clumping kitty litter

-flashlight with fresh batteries

-bandages

-and scissors or a knife

All of these can come in handy should you get stuck on the road in a weather emergency. Experts say, regardless of the severity of a winter storm or any weather event, you should always be prepared with emergency kits to help keep you and your family safe. The Red Cross offers check lists for multiple situations, not just winter weather. Check out redcross.org.
