HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville City School Board has approved a rezoning plan proposed by the superintendent in a unanimous vote.

At Thursday's work session, the board discussed differing rezoning plans put forward by both Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski and the Department of Justice.

Wardynski said the Department of Justice opposed the district's rezoning plan, and called the DOJ's plan "impractical and less diverse," citing safety concerns with their proposal when it comes to bus routes. He said the NAACP did not oppose the district's plan.

Both plans call for the closure of Butler High School.

"This plan will not take the school system to unitary status, but it will bring us one step closer," Wardynski said at the meeting.

Initial reaction to the plan when it was first introduced seemed more negative when compared to Thursday night's reception.

"The Department of Justice plan has multiple schools being divided up and going to several different high schools. We want to stay close to our neighborhood schools concept," said community member, Kimberly Battle. "The motion they voted on tonight is the right decision and the right approach we need to take. Hopefully, a judge will see it the same way."

As the Department of Justice did not approve the school system's plan, both parties are expected to file documents with a judge for further arbitration.
