BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A man died in a fire early Friday morning at the abandoned old Adams Inn on 3rd Avenue South in Birmingham.

Now, Birmingham City leaders and some businesses are calling for quick action to tear down the old Adams Inn Motel.

Authorities have not yet released the age or any other information about the male victim. The hotel is still vacant, but authorities say homeless people often use it for shelter.

"My heart goes out to the family any time you are talking about a loss of life," Johnathan Austin, Birmingham City Council President, said.

There is no official word yet on what sparked the fire, but it has been the site of multiple fires in the past, including one in July 2012.

Last year, the Birmingham city council voted to demolish the building and clear the land for new development.

Austin said the process unfortunately takes time.

"The city can't be held responsible 100 percent for this problem because this is private property. Property that has fallen into disrepair," Austin said.

Across the street at DK's Exotic Cuts, Christopher Parker hopes the city moves quickly to get rid of the motel which Parker called a detriment to the community.

"You see any and everything going on over there. People hang out over there. Recently the other end of the shop was broken into," Parker said.

Parker believed if the property was redeveloped it would benefit all the businesses in the area. Austin announced he hopes the city council will act as soon as Tuesday to push for quick demolition of the Adams Inn.

"We have done it in the past that we can decide something is an emergency and say it's dangerous building and we can immediately on and treat that property down," Austin said.
