HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Officials at Redstone Arsenal announced Friday that Gate 8 will reopen to traffic starting Monday morning.
Additional security personnel and gate guards will also be hired to help ease the recent traffic congestion, according to the announcement.
At 5:30 a.m. Monday, Gate 8 will open to incoming and outgoing traffic. The gate will be closed to all traffic at 1 p.m. Weekend hours will be from 5:30 a.m. to midnight.
Hours at the other gates will not change.
Redstone officials said staff cutbacks ordered by the US Army Installation Management Command led to Gate 8 being closed. "We got to a level where we couldn't support manning every gate. We had to develop a process to where we could either close lanes or reduce a gate. Based on our traffic survey, we elected to close a gate - and you saw what happened," said security supervisor Kevin Dykeman.
More personnel will man the gates over the next few weeks to deal with the morning rush hour, but the hiring and training process for new hires will take some time.
