LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Students are being reassigned to different schools in Lawrence County.

  • 7th and 8th grade classes at the Speake School will move to Moulton Middle.
  • 7th and 8th graders at Mount Hope School will move to Hatton High School.
  • 7th and 8th graders at Hazlewood Elementary will move to R.A. Hubbard.
  • Kindergarten through 6th grade classes at R.A. Hubbard will move to Hazlewood Elementary.
  • Finally, 4th graders at East Lawrence Middle School will move to East Lawrence Elementary.
The changes will go into effect next school year.

The Superintendent said the changes will allow the district to provide a better education on a smaller budget. As the closure of the International Paper Mill begins to reduce already small tax revenues, Superintendent Heath Grimes said the changes are an effort to be more efficient with the teaching staff and taxpayer money.

The moves could save up to $600,000 per year. The plan also prevents students from being in combined classes with different grade levels and makes the size of each class equal.
