A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Lee County Saturday evening. Authorities say 30-year-old Ricardo Denard Jones was fatally injured around 7:05 p.m. after a vehicle hit him on U.S. Highway 280 East near Lee Road 943.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies, Alabama State Troopers and members of the Salem Volunteer Fire Dept. and EAMC emergency crews responded to the call.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris' office says Jones was found lying in the roadway and was pronounced dead on the scene. Harris says the victim died of multiple blunt force impact injuries and internal injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Jones, Lakesha Ann Greer, of Opelika, was transported to East Alabama Medical Center for what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Two juveniles in Greer's vehicle were not believed to be injured.

Harris' office says it appears Jones, whose listed address is on Lee Road, was walking in the roadway or attempting to cross the roadway when he stepped into the path of Greer's late model Nissan Versa.

Authorities closed both lanes of Hwy. 280 for more than two hours while Alabama State Troopers investigated the incident.

The accident remains under investigation by Alabama State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner's office.. While the case will be presented to a grand jury, Harris' office does not expect any charges to be filed.
