Tuscaloosa authorities say a 14-year-old boy accidentally drowned after he and another juvenile jumped out of a boat and tried to swim toward shore.
The drowning happened at a private pond near New Asia Road in the Coaling area around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9.
Authorities identified the drowning victim as Jaylen Davis-Williams, 14.
Davis-Williams and two other juveniles apparently found a boat near the pond. Davis-Williams and one of the juveniles pushed it off the shore and got inside. The boat didn't have paddles, so they used their hands to try to paddle back to shore.
The two juveniles eventually jumped out of the boat, but only one made it to shore. The youth called 911 to alert authorities.
Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m. A Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue dive unit found Williams' body about 15 to 20 feet from the shoreline.
Sgt. Dale Phillips with the Homicide Unit says there were no signs of foul play and William's drowning death appears to be accidental.
