LUDLOW, MA (WSHM) -

A Ludlow man was charged with animal cruelty Friday and was held without bail after a court appearance Monday.

The MSPCA removed dozens of animals from a Ludlow property Friday and charged 43-year-old Dean Manuel. The animals were part of an unlicensed traveling petting zoo and were malnourished.

MSPCA Officer Christine Allenburg said when they arrived to Sroka Lane they found sheep, goats, ducks, geese, donkeys, alpacas, ponies, an emu, horses and pot belly pigs. One alpaca couldn't stand, and many other farm animals looked sick and weak, she said.

"The animals had not been provided with proper food or water for an unknown period of time.  The conditions were grave. Some of the animals were in very poor conditions. So they were removed from separate facilities to care for them. Some were taken for emergency medical care," Allenburg said.

Thirty-five animals were removed from the property, she said.

Manuel's attorney requested the arraignment be rescheduled for a competency test to be done. Maunel was also charged with assault and battery on a police officer.

Authorities were notified after neighbors noticed the animals were not being fed properly, and did not have shelter in the cold, Allenburg said.

Manuel was held without bail.
