LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - More vehicles are stranded along shoulders or stuck in the median this winter after consistent snowfall and bitterly cold temperatures. The wear and tear is having an impact on the number of vehicles abandoned on area roadways.

"We've seen an increase this year just for the simple fact we've had more snow this year than we have in previous years," Trooper Jeff Gregory said.

Kentucky State Police notify towing service companies when unattended vehicles are left on interstates more than six hours. Drivers have up to three days to retrieve an abandoned car or truck left on a county road, highway or parkway until it's towed.

When drivers leave their vehicle behind some end up paying to get it back at Carl's Auto Care.

"This has been our busiest winter so far," Mike Graham said. Graham, who works at the family-owned service and towing business, has eight unclaimed vehicles in his lot.

It'll cost at least $100 to retrieve a vehicle once it is removed and taken to an impound lot. Drivers are charged an additional $25 a day 24-hours after the vehicle is towed.

There is not a state fine, but vehicles are marked with an orange ticket signifying the date and time a trooper noticed the abandoned vehicle.

State police said the vehicles are a hazard because snow plows can't navigate the interstates shoulder.

However, Gregory said the most common mistake people make is not notifying KSP when their vehicle is stranded.

"We do try to use a little discretion as far as that goes, especially if they will call and tell us 'hey, we broke down and please don't tow it,'" Gregory said.

Owners have 60 to 90 days once a vehicle is impounded until a process begins to acquire the vehicle's title.
