SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A firefighter and elderly woman are recovering Tuesday after a fire at a Sylvania Township home Monday night.

The fire started around 7:30 p.m. in the 5000 Homerdale Avenue and quickly spread over the large house.

"I saw flames shooting out of the front window becoming more and more enraged as time went on. Then the smoke began, and the smoke at times billowed so hard, that it obscured the house itself. And it was frightening," said neighbor Janice Dempster.

The homeowner, who is in her 70s, was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. A firefighter who slipped on ice and hurt his back was also taken to the hospital for treatment. He was released early Tuesday morning.

There is still no word on how the fire started, but the home is a complete loss and will have to be demolished.
