WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WXII/CNN) - Hospital officials in Winston-Salem, NC, are notifying 18 neurosurgery patients that they may have been exposed to an incurable brain disease.
The patients were treated at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.
The hospital says the same equipment used on a patient who later tested positive for Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease may have been used on 18 other patients in the last three weeks.
There's no cure for the disease, and standard sterilization procedures do not always eliminate all traces of the disease from surgical equipment.
But hospital officials say the likelihood the other 18 patients contracted the disease is very low.
The hospital has released a statement apologizing to the patients affected.
