BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A second round of winter storms is pushing its way into the Birmingham area. A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect until Thursday at 6 a.m.

Mickey Ferguson, with the Fox6 StormWarn team, says many northern counties began to see a wintry mix of precipitation before 7 a.m. The Fox6 viewing area began to see icy conditions in mid-morning with freezing rain in Etowah, Cherokee and Cleburne Counties.

The wintry mix will begin to transition to snow in the afternoon with the highest accumulations in far northeast Alabama. The amounts will fall off to the south and west with a dusting expected just south of the I-20/59 corridor.

Overnight, the counties to the east and northeast bordering the Georgia state line could see ice accumulations ranging form 1/10 to 3/10s of an inch thick. The weather will improve drastically on Thursday with high's in the 40s and sunshine. The weekend could see highs in the upper 50s and 60s.
