State votes unanimously for takeover of Selma City School system

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

An intervention! The Alabama State Department of Education's Board of Education voted unanimously to takeover the Selma City School district.

Selma's City School Superintendent Gerald Shirley witnessed the vote but was in no mood to talk about it after he walked out.

Shirley only offered 'I have no comment,' and again had 'no comment' when pressed by WSFA 12 New reporter Bryan Henry.

The board accepted State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice's recommendation to intervene, a recommendation that comes months after a blistering report showing evidence of academic problems, guidelines not being followed and a Selma High School teacher allgedly having sex with a student.

"We will be looking at institutional control and secondly we have real questions about what's being taught and what's being learned," said Bice.

Dr. Bice says the school district did, in fact, submit a plan of action to correct the issues.

"But in my opinion it really didn't address the situation immediately," Bice told the board.

Selma resident Dee Henderson applauded the board's vote.

"This is a vote that stands up for our children," said Henderson.

Henderson participated in several protests a few weeks ago calling for major changes in the front office.

The state takeover is set to last for two years but it could end sooner.

"It depends on the Selma leadership. Do they want to work against us or with us," Bice said.

Dr. Bice says the takeover begins in earnest at the latest next week.

This is the fourth school district the state has taken over since Dr. Tommy Bice became the state public school superintendent two years ago.

The Alabama State Department of Education has voted unanimously to take over the Selma City Schools System. The takeover begins next week.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice had warned for some time that such action may be necessary and had put the system on notice.
