Woman accused of shooting boyfriend at a distance for stepping onto property

Ashlea Scroggins, 26 Ashlea Scroggins, 26
CRAWFORD, AL (WTVM) -

Sheriff Heath Taylor has confirmed new details about the shooting on Glenhaven Road in Russell County.

Ashlea Scroggins, 26, is now in jail, charged with the attempted murder of her boyfriend, Jeffrey Spear, who was shot multiple times with a .22 rifle.

Scroggins' father spoke to us off-camera, and said his daughter came to his house to escape her boyfriend, who he described as "abusive."  He also said his daughter acted in self-defense.

But the man who was shot tells a very different story.   Spear was released from the hospital late Thursday night and he immediately contacted WTVM to share his side of the story. He said the incident began when a bottle of his pills went missing.

"We've had some arguments, but I've never put my hands on her or anything. She was not in a life threatening situation.   Like I said, I was probably seventy-five feet from her."

Spear said he arrived at the address on Glenhaven at about 4 p.m. to pick up the keys to his car which were in Scroggins' possession.  He did not get the text message telling him the keys were in the mailbox at the end of the driveway.  The message also warned Spear to stay off the property.

According to Spear, he read that message for the first time in the ambulance on his way to the hospital.

After his girlfriend finished firing the first weapon, Spear said she was handed another and she began shooting again, hitting him three times in the side.

"When the police showed up, she was fixing to shoot me again, and the police told her to put the gun down or they were going to shoot her," said Spear.

Spear said he called 911 while hiding behind the door of his pickup truck.

Scroggins remains in the Russell County Jail without bond.

Sheriff Taylor said there is a documented history showing a series of domestic disputes between Spear and Scroggins.  The incidents name a different party as the victim each time.
