MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

An elderly woman has died in a Montgomery house fire, according to officials with the Montgomery Fire Department.

The fire broke out in the noon hour at a residence on Murray Street near downtown.  The preliminary cause of the fire was likely combustible materials located too close to a space heater.

The victim has not been identified, but investigators say they can confirm the fire took the life of an 90-year-old woman.

Officials says the victim was home alone at the time of the fire.

This is the first fatal fire in Montgomery this year, falling on the heels of more than 30 fatal fires across the state.  So far, 2014 has been the deadliest year for fire fatalities on record.

The fire remains under investigation.
