HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Remington Outdoor Company's announcement that it will expand operations to the Huntsville area also brought the promise of 2,000 jobs over the next decade. But the impact on the jobs situation in the Rocket City goes beyond just the plant.

A local economist said this is a long-term investment, and that's why, he says, you really need to triple the number of jobs this will really create in the Tennessee Valley.

Dr. Tom Pieplow said Remington's presence will have a positive impact in the home building and construction sector. He said it will also have a major impact on consumer goods – that means more grocery stores, restaurants, and even schools.

He said the real unknown factor is how many suppliers partner with Remington on specific pieces to their firearms. If the number is large, we could be looking at more than the original 6,000 primary and secondary job estimate.

"In a lot of instances, they're not manufacturers, they are assemblers. They are dependent upon a stream of second and third-tier suppliers coming together, whether it be with the raw steel, trigger mechanisms, or stocks," Pieplow said.

Remington CEO George Kollitides said they plan on manufacturing new products at the Huntsville facility. He did not go into specific detail on what that is because he said the goods are not available for consumers yet. He also declined to comment on whether any of those supply companies would also be expanding to Huntsville with Remington.
