BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A big announcement is expected next week which will benefit young children and downtown Birmingham.

The McWane Science Center will reveal plans for a $5 million 10,000 square foot Children's Museum. The museum will be aimed at children from birth to kindergarten and will be built on the second floor of the museum.

On Monday, workers were clearing the area so construction can start next week.

"It's preparation for school. There is all kinds of research that shows that children who have early leaning experiences during their formative years do better in school throughout their school career," President and CEO McWane Science Center President and CEO Amy Templeton said.

The city of Birmingham contributed $2 million dollars to the project and the science center raised the other $3 million. McWane officials believe the museum will bring in an additional 50,000 to 100,000 visits a year.

"If they come downtown to enjoy the Children's Museum at the McWane Science Center, then they can go other activities downtown. We believe it will be a big draw for downtown," Templeton said.

Construction starts soon and the Children's Museum should be open by early 2015.
