JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A man from north Jefferson County is accused of using his 81-year-old blind mother as a human shield in a standoff with deputies Sunday night.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence call just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 6800 block of Garrett Drive.

Before deputies arrived at the scene, neighbors alerted them that the suspect, 42-year-old Mark Bryon McAvoy, came to their home, hands covered in blood, and admitted to killing his mother. Neighbors said the man left and barricaded himself inside his own home.

Deputies discovered that McAvoy's mother was still alive but was being held against her will. McAvoy spoke with Gardendale police officers through a window and said that he had a weapon. He threatened to shoot and kill anyone who tried to come inside, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

A sheriff's sergeant spoke with McAvoy through a window and the man agreed to let his mother go in exchange for cigarettes. But once he had the cigarettes, "he changed his mind and became angry again," Christian said.

McAvoy then told officers, "You will have to kill me, but I will kill my mother first."

McAvoy told deputies they would have to shoot through him to get to his mother, Christian said. He claimed he had two grenades and a gun held at his mother's back.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around the scene and called in SWAT officers.

After they determined that McAvoy would not leave the home voluntarily, authorities deployed tear gas and sent in a SWAT team. McAvoy separated from his mother and fell to the floor, then started fighting deputies as they handcuffed him, according to Christian.

McAvoy's mother was taken to the hospital for observation and she is reportedly OK.

"It's hard to understand people that are capable of that, and you know, I think there's a special place for them. In fact, I'm counting on it," chief deputy Christian said.

McAvoy was treated on the scene then transported to the Jefferson County Jail. He has been charged with kidnapping, assault, making a terrorist threat, unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. He is being held in jail on a $112,000 bond.
