JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

From life in prison to a lesser sentence; a plea landed 32 year old Stanley Cole 40 years behind bars for killing his ex-girlfriend.

"I think God has shown Mr. Cole mercy today," said Danny Bolden. "He should have been in prison for the rest of his life."

Cole pled guilty to manslaughter, armed robbery and aggravated stalking, landing him 40 years in prison. He killed his ex-girlfriend, 20 year Latasha Norman, back in 2007. Norman's family says they are happy justice has finally been served.

"This has been an up and down emotional process, added Bolden. "So, we are so glad this is finally over with."

"It's a release. It's some peace," said Takeisha Norman. "I mean you know, we can't have her back. You know, it gives us some peace that he will be staying another 34 years you know."

Cole was arrested in 2007 and has been in prison since that time. He will receive a six year credit for time served.

Twenty-year old Jackson State student Latasha Norman was stabbed in the chest, then stuffed in the trunk of her own car. Cole then drove that car around for days before dumping her body in a north Jackson wooded area.

In 2010 a Hinds County jury convicted Cole of murdering Norman. He was sentenced to life in prison.

A short time later an appeals court overturned that conviction, ruling Manslaughter should have been an option for the jury.

"I just feel like justice was served," added Takeisha Norman. "Hopefully he will get his self together. Hopefully God conditions his heart and works on him to realize what he did and make himself a better man."

"Almost seven years we finally have come to an end," added Bolden.
