FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) -

An elderly man was killed in a Fort Mill house fire Wednesday night, according to officials.

The fire happened at a home on the 1800 block of Williams Road just after 7:30 p.m.

Officials say 84-year-old Kenneth Sloan helped his wife escape from the burning home before going back in to try to put out the fire.

Sloan died from smoke inhalation. His wife was taken to Piedmont Medical Center due to injuries. She was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Bill Bagwell, a long-time neighbor told WBTV that the couple was inseparable.

"They were a really nice couple that took care of each other. He was very devoted to her and she was very devoted to him," Bagwell said.

Fire officials say a frayed wire from an assisting lifting recliner sparked the fire.
