Montgomery ice skaters inspired by Olympians

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

With the cream of the crop in figure skating gaining international recognition as they go for gold in Sochi, local skaters are riveted as they cheer on Team USA.

From team skating and ice dancing to figure skating, those who take part in the sport here at home say the Olympics are giving them a lot of motivation.

At K Lynn's skating school in Montgomery, the athletes know what it takes to succeed in their sport.

"You have to work hard and there's a lot of practice and it takes energy and time," said skater Evan White during practice at the Eastdale Mall's Ice Palace rink Wednesday night.

"We skate Sunday nights as a team. They have classes on Monday, lessons during the week. It's a crazy schedule. They train and do competitions, about three a year. They do some international competitions," said Kathy Lynn Shankle, owner of K Lynn skating school.

And Shankle's team of skaters win big. They just placed third overall in a district competition in Florida.

From practice, to school and participating in other sports and dance classes, the skaters have long days but the Olympics have only made them want to push harder.

"It's been so inspirational. I watch it and I get tips all of the time, seeing how the girls jump, how they spin, trying to apply it to my skating. It's motivational. I love watching them," said skater, Emily Magda. "Skating is such a huge part of my life. I don't know where I'd be without it."

"It's fun because I'm like, 'I'm going to go there one day, I'm going to be in the Olympics," added Evan White.

"It brings out their passion. They get excited. They see what can be done. They get out here and try the moves. They try to step up their game. It's really fun to watch that," Shankle told WSFA. She said some of the skaters have met a few members of the USA's skating team at different competitions and showcases.

The Olympic skaters are proof of how determination, hard work and talent can catapult you to the top and the K Lynn skaters and others who are passionate about the sport will be cheering them on every step of the way as they try to achieve Olympic glory.

For those who have caught Olympic skating fever, K Lynn's Skating School will be offering beginner classes starting Saturday at the Eastdale Mall. The classes start at 8:30 AM but those interested are asked to be there earlier to register. It's a "two-for-one" Olympic special and students can bring a friend along for free for the lesson.

The skating school will do their next performance at the Eastdale Mall on March 29th.
