BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Kids in the Birmingham City School System will be making up for time lost in the past month's winter weather.

On Thursday, school board announced a plan to extend the school year to June 2, 2014 from May 29, 2014. The plan will recover 2.5 lost instructional days out of the 6 days schools were shut down from the weather. Two inclement weather days from the school calendar will be used and April 18th will be extended from a half day to a full instructional day.

The system will request a waiver for the remaining 3.5 days.

"Six days represent a huge amount of lost instructional time," said Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. "Through the year, we stress the impact that attendance has on student achievement, and we owe it to our students to give them back some of that time."
