COTTONTON, AL -

UPDATE 2-21-14:  Authorities found the victim's vehicle Friday morning.

Wednesday evening is usually the time the congregation at New Hope Baptist Church meets to study the bible, but it was unexpectedly canceled while sheriff's deputies studied a crime scene.

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said Sayquawn Wiggins was shot to death on church property just hours before his body was discovered.

The sheriff said the killers made no attempt to hide the body. They left it in the cemetery in full view for parishioners to find.

"And the preacher was one of the first there, and obviously, where the body was laying, it was readily visible," said Sheriff Taylor.

Pastor H.C. Mcgruder Jr. said, "We're praying for the family, we're praying for the children who had to experience that last night.   Going to the church, we never expected anything like that to happen."

Sheriff Taylor believes the church property, between Cottonton and Holy Trinity, Ala., was chosen because of its distance from other houses and the main road.

"Our church is located in an area that's kind of secluded, isolated off of Highway 165, but we've never had anything like this happen and we are praying that things will be resolved quickly," said McGruder.

Investigators are not naming any suspects at the time.

Wiggins has family in Phenix City and Opelika.   He was about to turn 20 in March.

If you have information about this crime, you should call the Russell County Sheriff, at 334-298-6535.
