DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Decatur's United Launch Alliance is giving the power to push the boundaries of space travel in an upcoming historic launch just a few months away.

The Orion Crew Capsule will go farther into space than any spacecraft made for human flight has in 40 years, and the Delta launch vehicle that will get it there is being built in Decatur.

The Delta IV Heavy Rocket will push the Orion 3,600 miles into space. The starboard booster rolled out of the factory Friday, and is headed by cargo ship to Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is one of the three boosters that will power the rocket for Orion's exploration test flight in the fall. It'll be an unmanned test, and the first step towards expanding mankind's frontiers.

"The ultimate goal is to get humans flying, and not only flying, but flying further than ever before," said Corey Brooker of Lockheed Martin, the company building the Orion Crew Capsule.  "We have this test flight this year. 2017 is our first exploration test unmanned, and then 2021 is our current timetable for our manned mission."
