MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama representatives are reacting following news that U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is proposing a reduction of the Army to the smallest size it has been since World War II. The reduction would see the closure of military bases, along with other military-wide cost reductions. Read more HERE.

Here are statements that are currently available from Alabama's representatives regarding the possible cuts. More statements will be posted as they become available.

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL)

"As we shrink our forces, we better be careful because the security of this nation and our commitments abroad are very important..."

Rep. Martha Roby (R-Dist 2)

"With the drawdown of forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, along with our current budget limitations, changes to our military are no doubt necessary," Rep. Roby said. "However, those changes should reflect our national defense priorities and common sense, not politics.

"I have been personally engaged in discussions surrounding the Army's planned changes. As it stands, the plan would have a positive impact on Fort Rucker and the critical training mission at the Army Aviation Center of Excellence.

"It is important to point out that military budget reductions would have been much more severe if Congress had not passed a budget agreement in December that restored significant funding cut by sequestration.

"Much of what Sec. Hagel released today was expected, and I look forward to reviewing President Obama's full budget request when it is released next month."

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Dist 3)

"We live in a dangerous world and should not hollow out the security of our nation by cutting our military.  I oppose efforts like this to downsize our Armed Forces, and will continue to work on the Armed Services Committee to help set priorities that keep America's military strong while also addressing the realities of our current budget situation."

Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Dist 7)

"While today's preview we received of the proposed defense budget highlights some of the tough choices being made, I am concerned that they will threaten our Nation's defense capabilities. Our Nation's military preparedness cannot be compromised and I look forward to seeing the proposed budget in its entirety next month. We must work together to create a more balanced defense budget that allocates our resources wisely and continues to make cost effective investments."
