MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Longtime Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks announced her retirement Tuesday, effective immediately. She's held the position since 1993.
Brooks is being replaced by Daryl Bailey following his appointment by Governor Robert Bentley. Bailey had been the Deputy District Attorney since 1997.
Brooks told WSFA 12 News in an interview that she was thankful to the governor for being gracious and making a quick decision. She said she had been in discussion with Gov. Bentley about her plans and he agreed to appoint Bailey to finish her term.
WSFA 12 News has obtained a copy of Brooks' resignation letter, dated February 24, 2014. In the letter to Governor Bentley, she writes, " Now it is my privilege to offer my service in a different capacity as supernumerary district attorney."
A supernumerary district attorney is an official designation for retired district attorneys in which he/she would serve or fill-in in various cases, as requested by the governor, attorney general or chief justice of the state's supreme court.
Brooks said she is looking forward to traveling, and she says she does have other opportunities, though she would not elaborate.
The mood in the District Attorney's office was "jovial" according to a WSFA 12 News crew on scene, with staff members in high spirits.
Bailey told WSFA 12 News he was honored to replace Brooks, calling her his "mentor". He said he learned leadership from her during his years as second in command.
Bailey called the move into his new office a seamless transition and said he feels good going forward.
Brooks, a native of Montgomery County, started her career in 1977 in prosecution. She completed her clerkship with the Alabama Supreme Court and soon became a Deputy District Attorney in the Montgomery Co. DA's office.
In 1981, Brooks was appointed Director for the White Collar Crime Unit, to be followed within two years as Chief Deputy DA.
Nearly a decade later in 1991, Brooks moved from County to State after being appointed Deputy Attorney General for Alabama. Brooks held that position until 1993 when she was elected Montgomery County District Attorney, a position she held for 21 years.
Brooks is a member of numerous organizations including the Montgomery County Children's Policy Council, Leadership Montgomery and Junior League of Montgomery. She also maintains an active role in her church.
Brooks spent time as a child roaming the halls of WSFA-TV while her mother, Idelle Brooks hosted shows like "Partyline" and "The Guestroom" in the 1950s and 60s.
Bailey attended Jones School of Law at Faulkner University where he graduated in 1996. He was hired into the Montgomery County District Attorney's office in 1997 following his admission to the Alabama Bar. He has been Chief Deputy District Attorney until the current date.
Bailey was the Director of the Violence Against Women Unit from 1999-2002 and maintains affiliations with the Domestic Violence Task Force, the Montgomery County Sexual Assault Team and other organizations.
Deputy District Attorney Azzie Taylor is being promoted to fill Bailey's position as Chief Deputy District Attorney. Taylor held her previous position since 2003.
Taylor graduated from the Jones School of Law at Faulkner University in 1996 and was admitted to the Bar in 2003.
She is a 1998 graduate of Alabama State University where she studied Criminal Justice.
