TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) -

Trussville voters have approved a seven mil property tax increase that is expected to generate about $2 million per year for schools.

The measure passed with 59% of the vote. Officials say 36% of registered voters cast a ballot.

Trussvillle City Schools Superintendent Pattie Neill said the money will be used to combat overcrowding and get rid of portable classrooms. The system hopes to turn the old high school into a new elementary school and a new elementary school will be built in Magnolia Place.

Opponents to the increase are concerned with the burden on homeowners.
