A Helena fire department captain tells FOX6 reporter Erika Gonzalez there is no hazardous material leak on a stopped train, and there's no threat to anyone in the community.
A hazmat crew from Norfolk Southern wrapped up an inspection of 70 rail cars at about 12 a.m. Wednesday. The train stopped before 9 p.m. Tuesday to inspect a possible hazardous material leak. There were reports of a "chemical smell" coming from the train says Captain Chad Agee.
The crew found one gasket leaking on a car carrying turpentine sulfate, a by-product of paper manufacturing. They say it's not a danger to anyone, said Agee.
The Norfolk Southern crew is fixing the leak, and then the train will be on its way.
Fire and police staged in the 500 block of Highway 52 on the west side of town for a few hours Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
