TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

A Tuscaloosa man accused of killing his girlfriend by lighting her on fire has pleaded guilty to her murder.

Clayton Fleming, 51, avoided a trial and a possible death sentence by accepting a plea deal for life imprisonment.

Fleming is accused of killing his girlfriend Catherine Ann Provo, 46, in October 2009 after getting into an argument at her home in Tuscaloosa's Bonita Terrace neighborhood.

Investigators say at some point Fleming left, bought gasoline and brought it back to the home. He then doused Provo with the gasoline and ignited her. The fire also burned part of her house.

Investigators say the argument was sparked by Fleming's belief that his girlfriend had cheated on him.

Provo ran across the street to get help from neighbors, but died a week later from her burns. She left behind two daughters and a son, according to her friend and neighbor Teresa McCruter.

McCruter said she often spoke with Provo on the phone, and Provo told her that Fleming had threatened to kill her before. Provo didn't seem to take the threats too seriously, McCruter said.

Fleming was arrested on Oct. 2, 2009 and charged with capital murder and arson, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's office.

Fleming is in custody of the Tuscaloosa County Jail and will later be assigned to a state prison.
