Goodwyn M. S. students say goodbye to classmate killed in wreck

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It was an emotional day at Goodwyn Middle School in Montgomery as students and teachers came together to mourn the loss of a student.

Eleven-year-old Naycha Night was killed in a crash this weekend in Montgomery County.

Friday afternoon, she was remembered by those who knew her best.

"We are a family member here at Goodwyn," said Alvin Bell, who was Naycha's math teacher.

Naycha was a sixth grader at the school. She's remembered as a dream student in the classroom.

Bell says he wants people to know "how sweet she was, beautiful smile, how articulate and intelligent, and caring she was."

"She was a beautiful child and a happy child," said Teneha Wilson, whose daughter was best friends with Naycha.

Classmate and friend, Kaleah Harris, added, "she was nice, funny, and she always shared."

For many, it's still difficult to understand how their classmate and friend could be gone.

"It's horrible because you cry all the time," Harris said.

To honor Naycha, students wore blue, her favorite color, and released balloons, choosing to remember the good instead of focusing on the devastating loss.

"I don't think she would want us to cry or be said," Harris said.

For her family, they hope students will learn a life-long lesson.

"Put God first and make sure every loved one in your life, you remind them every day that you love them because you never know when the day is going to come when you're not going to get that opportunity," said Linda Perkins, Naycha's grandmother.

The accident also sent Naycha's best friend, 12-year-old Charletta Griffin, to the hospital. Charletta's mother tells WSFA 12 News her daughter is doing well and will be released Friday from Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Naycha's mother, Lametric Maddox, remains in the hospital. There's no word on her condition.

A second child involved in the crash was killed. Two-year-old Heaven Brooks died of her injuries Wednesday. Balloons were also released at Friday's memorial service for Heaven and Charletta.
