Woodland wins 2A girls title, 65-52 over Red Bay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Leah Strain had 27 points, seven assists and seven rebounds to lead Woodland to a 65-52 win over Red Bay on Friday, capturing the school's second straight Class 2A girls championship.

Woodland (34-1) hadn't won a state title in any sport before winning last year's championship.      Adreona Bowen finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting.

Woodland outrebounded Red Bay (32-4) 36-17 and built a 35-17 halftime lead. Red Bay outscored Woodland 35-30 in the second half.

Allie Kennedy led Red Bay with 19 points and made three 3-pointers. Kasey Sparks scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

Woodland made 24 of 46 shots (52.2 percent).

Strain was named the tournament MVP while Bowen also made the all-tournament team, along with Red Bay's Kennedy and Sparks.

Samson's LaTascya Duff and Montgomery Academy's Jade Brooks rounded out the team.
