WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

The state now wants to try a 14-year-old driver as an adult in a deadly crash that killed a local teen in October.

Every time the family of Casey Knight walks through the doors at Wyandotte County's juvenile court it takes them back to the day the 14-year-old died.

"Being here brings back the memory of that day. I just want it all to be over with," said Teri Bishop, Casey's mother.

For Bishop, time has not helped heal her broken heart after her daughter was killed in a car crash on Oct. 7. Prosecutors say a 14-year-old boy was driving the stolen SUV with several other teenage passengers when he crashed near 12th and Dodson streets.

Surveillance video showed the teens fleeing the scene of the accident, leaving Casey and another injured friend behind.

KCTV5 is not naming the teen who was charged in December with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery for injuries to another teen and felony theft. Friday prosecutors said they want the teen charged as an adult.

"At least he could show some remorse. It wouldn't make it easier, but it might make it a little better," said Shyla Jordan, Casey's sister.

Casey's family believes consequences are the only way the teen will learn because this isn't the first time he's been in trouble. Just five days before Casey was killed, the teen was charged with felony theft for stealing a different car. He also faces other theft and weapons charges.

The boy's attorney, James Brun, said Friday he would fight the state's attempts to move the case to district court saying, "I don't think he should be tried as an adult. He's a 14-year-old child. He should stay in juvenile court because that's the point of juvenile court."

Casey's family is hoping for the maximum penalty allowed.

"He just wants to get out, which I know everyone wants to get out, but he's got to learn a lesson from it all. All we hold is the possibility of her showing up in our dreams," said Michael Knight, Casey's father.

The hearing to determine if the teen will be tried as an adult is set for April 24.
