BIRMINGHAM,AL (WBRC) - A Birmingham woman is back home with her adopted daughter after being in the Ukraine for weeks as the country nestles on the brink of a Civil War.
Friends and family members of the Mayhew family waited at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport Friday night to welcome in the new addition to the family, 16 year old Elianna.
It's has been a moment that has been months in the making.
"Just constantly hoping and praying that God was going to bring us through but didn't know how it was going to get to the end and when it was going to get to the end, " said Julia Mayhew.
After numerous hurdles the Meyhew family welcomed Elianna with flowers, hugs and tears.
Her Dad, Ronnie said, "It means a lot of excitement a lot of change. It means a lot of adjustment, we have to find our new normal."
Since last June Ronnie and Julia have been working to bring Elianna home. And as things heated up in Ukraine it didn't make things any easier.
"We waited for 13 weeks and the back and forth in the Ukraine with the revolution that happened while we were there," said Julia.
But finally, friends and family were able to welcome home Elianna. It's something that's still surreal for Julia.
She said, "I just keep telling myself that eventually I am going to wake up and know that we're really a family of five now and we're all together."
