MENTONE, AL (WBRC) -

The Mentone Springs Hotel and the neighboring White Elephant Antique Store burned to the ground in a massive fire Saturday night.

The hotel was built in 1884 and was reportedly the oldest operating hotel in the state.

A hotel guest saw the fire and called 911. About eight guests were staying at the hotel at the time and everyone was safely evacuated.

Fire officials say the building is made of heart pine, so they knew it would be impossible to save. It was a total loss.

Officials say the fire may have started in a fuse or electrical box.
