A 21-year-old Shawnee man has been taken into custody in connection with the killing of a KCK man last week.
Joshua Hare turned himself in and was booked into the Wyandotte County Jail Tuesday on a $1,000,000 bond, a day after authorities issued an arrest warrant for him.
Wyandotte County prosecutors have charged Hare with second-degree murder in the Feb. 25 death of 26-year-old Chad Coen. Hare has also been charged with criminal possession of a firearm.
A woman made a startling discovery outside her Kansas City, KS, home when she found Coen shot to death in her yard, which was across from train tracks on Metropolitan Avenue.
Hare is the brother of 22-year-old Latisha Hare, whose body was found inside a burning vacant home on Feb. 3, near South 14th Street and Kansas Avenue in KCK.
Firefighters got a call to put out a fire inside the vacant home. Once inside, they found Latisha Hare's body. Police say it was obvious she was the victim of a homicide.
Police won't confirm Latisha Hare was pregnant, but family members say she was 13 weeks along.
Latisha Hare's family say they don't know why her body was found inside the home or who is responsible for her death.
Authorities say the fire was likely set to cover up the crime. Police are saying little about the open investigation and will not confirm the cause of Latisha Hare's death.
Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman said there is no direct connection now between Coen's murder and Latisha Hare's slaying, but he cannot rule it out.
"A lot of the names and a lot of the people involved in the two homicides ran in the same circles," he said.
Gorman said Joshua Hare is also wanted in connection with an armed robbery committed on the same day as Coen's death.
"There were weapons used in each of these two cases," he said. "So there's no reason to believe he's not still armed and dangerous."
Gorman said Joshua Hare is being sought on a second-degree murder charge because evidence does not suggest the killing was premeditated.
"There's still some investigation to be done," he said. "And if that leads us to the confusion that there's premeditation in the case then we'll up that charge."
