OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

Kansas City area students should be preparing hard for upcoming state tests, but most area public school districts canceled classes Monday due to the record-breaking cold.

Repeated snow and cold days have extended the school calendar.

The Lee's Summit School District has seen seven snow days already, which means school will be in session at least until May 20.

The Kansas City School District has pushed classes back to May 23.

Teachers are juggling lesson plans as they prepare students for upcoming state tests as they worry about students retaining important information.

Some district have had only one full week of uninterrupted classes since the holidays due to snow days, cold days, scheduled days off and holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. day and Presidents Day.

Amy Vance said it's going to be especially tough for children who need extra time for learning.

And spring break is next week for many districts. No districts at this point are scheduling classes during spring break. Some districts may pad each day slightly to get the makeup time in.

The Olathe and Kansas City, KS, school districts are still working out how they'll make up for snow and cold days.
