A Georgia educator with ties to Alabama is now facing child sex charges.

John McGill, 56, currently works in Douglasville, Ga. at an elementary school. McGill was arrested Sunday morning as part of a Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) sting and charged under the Computer Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 1999.

Investigators accuse McGill and others of traveling "with the intent to meet a child for sex."

Chilton County Schools Superintendent Dave Hayden says McGill was once a band teacher at Jemison High School and later the principal at Thorsby High School. However, Hayden couldn't confirm which years McGill was employed in Chilton County.

According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, McGill earned his PhD from Samford University and also has degrees from Troy and Alabama State.

Officials say he is suspended from his current duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The GBI was assisted by multiple agencies and a total of 14 people were arrested in the sting. Click here to read more about the operation.
