ACA or Obamacare deadline is March 31

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The last chance deadline to sign up for the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare and not get a fine is just a few weeks away.

Those who are eligible and don't have health insurance by March 31 could face a penalty fee.

For those who still need to sign up and aren't sure what to do, there are people to help.

Brad Wilkinson just lost his health insurance.

"I was laid off and they gave me 90 days insurance, and those 90 days expired at the end of February," he said.

He turned to healthcare.gov but needed some extra help to navigate the sign-up process.

"We're educated to show them their different options based on their needs so we can help guide them through that process," said Bill Brock, a certified application counselor.

Brock works with people like Wilkinson on a daily basis at Swope Health Services. There, 85 percent of applicants have purchased health insurance through the exchange.

"What we do is fairly smooth. I don't think it's complicated, but there are challenges from time to time," Brock said.

One of the biggest challenges is getting those eligible signed up before the March 31 deadline.

"We're going to get really busy. I think in the last couple of weeks particularly we might not have a personal life," Brock said.

For those who need insurance, the help of an application counselor is peace of mind.

"I'm not going to be lying awake at night going, ‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh,'" Wilkinson said.

For those wanting to sit down with a Swope Health Services certified application counselor, they can call 816-923-5800 to make an appointment. There is also an enrollment fair on March 15 and 29 at Swope Health Services, located at 3801 Blue Parkway, Kansas City, MO, 64130.
