The Bama Belle is one step closer to staying on the Black Warrior River while another business owner looks to share the dock.
The Bama Belle is closer to sailing according to owner Thad Garner. He gave a progress report to a Tuscaloosa Committee Tuesday evening. The city told Garner last month that he needed to pay his debts based on his lease or find another place for the steamboat.
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances we hope to get it running soon as possible," Garner said.
Garner says finalizing a $1 million insurance policy on the boat was preventing him from honoring the lease.
"We were unable to get insurance on the boat until it was inspected by the Coast Guard," he said.
Garner told city officials he has the parts to get the boat running and is waiting for warmer temperatures to get started. He hopes to have it ready for inspection by next month.
Reggie Murray also updated the city on his plans to start his boat rental business on the same dock. He hopes to add paddle boats.
Garner's next progress report is scheduled for April 1.
