Student hospitalized after fight at Grandview High School

A student suffering from a head injury has been hospitalized after a fight at Grandview High School.

Police were called to the school after the fight broke out between two students when students were just getting out of school about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. A 17-year-old allegedly involved was taken in by police for questioning and held overnight. A 14-year-old is still under observation by doctors.

The school principal says he is still putting the pieces together on how this all happened.

"Without having all the facts in my hand I can't say for certain, but I can tell you based in the work that I have done with this particular case I do not believe there was any intent for students to have an altercation," said Principal Steve Scraggs. "I think it was happenstance based on some circumstances that occurred as they were exiting the building."

Students said they saw the 14-year-old hit his head on the ground and get knocked out. The student was rushed to the hospital.

The school district said the 17-year-old was then taken into police custody.

Scraggs can't say too much about the alleged altercation, but is investigating whether the incident was horseplay that escalated or an outright fight.

He said he does want parents to get involved following what happened.

"It only takes a second for someone to be fooling around with someone else, not paying attention, being mischievous and make a bad decision or have someone around them make a bad decision, so talk to students like we do here at school," he said.

The 17-year-old was released by police Wednesday and no charges have been filed at this time.

Police continue to investigate. The school is interviewing students and staff and looking over surveillance tapes at the high school.
