Dothan PD issues scam alert about phone call

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The Dothan Police Department is issuing a scam alert following information it learned Wednesday in regards to a phone call soliciting money.

Police Chief Gregory Benton's office says someone is calling unsuspecting citizens in an attempt to solicite funds for the Law Enforcement 2014 National Night Out event.

The police department says the caller is identifying himself as a Dothan Police Officer, which the department says is not true.

"We ask that everyone stay alert when dealing with ANY calls in which a person is asking for monetary donations. Inquire about these fundraisers by contacting the organization they represent," the Department said. "If you're suspicious about someone contacting you for donations, question them. Most scam artist will stay away from answering questions because it ties them up with speaking to you longer than they expected."
