(WMC-TV) - It's the photo seen around the world: Ellen DeGeneres' Oscar selfie.
More than two million people retweeted the photo of famous celebrities posed for a selfie Sunday night, and that sparked Samsung to donate $3 million to Ellen's favorite charities. One of them is St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Now the hospital has found a special way to tell Ellen thank you.
"These are these types of powerful special moments that we call St. Jude Moments that happen that we love to receive," said ALSAC St. Jude Chief Marketing Officer Emily Callahan. "And then literally just before it got announced to the public we got notified from Samsung and Ellen's producers that they wanted to do something generous for St. Jude."
The donation: $1.5 million from Samsung for Ellen's Oscars tweet seen around the globe.
"Its been an incredible phenomenon to watch just to see the buzz around social media and then to find out it's going to benefit us," said Callahan.
She says in addition to the monetary donation, the awareness raised by a tweet that reached millions of people is priceless.
"You know that's how we raise money ... Is millions of people that do these little small things, that make a huge effort, and it's things like that means no family has to pay St. Jude for anything," said Callahan.
Adding to the buzz, Marlo Thomas recreated Ellen's selfie at a photo shoot this week with St. Jude patients. To which Ellen DeGeneres retweeted saying, "Now that's what I call a selfie worth retweeting. "
