MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

There's a strong response coming out against a longtime state representative's controversial remarks about abortion and race.

Democratic Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery made the controversial statements on the House floor Tuesday.

"Ninety-nine percent of those of you sitting in here now, if your daughter got pregnant by a black man, you going to make her have an abortion, you not going to let her have the baby," Holmes said.

Holmes, who has represented Alabama's 78th District since 1974, is up for re-election, and the woman running against him says she's appalled, calling the remarks racist, but says she's not surprised.

"He said that being pro-life was for white people, that's not true," said opponent Tijuanna Adetunji. "Pro-life is loving babies whether they're inside the womb or outside of the womb. Whether you're black or white - it doesn't have a color."

Alabama GOP Chairman Bill Armistead, in a statement released by the party, said, "Representative Holmes continues to spout racist and derogatory language on the floor of the Alabama House of Representatives. Voters in his district should be embarrassed by him and should expect more from their representative."

The four bills that Rep. Holmes and other legislators were debating ultimately passed the Alabama House. One bill would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Adetunji, a Republican, and Holmes face off in the November General Election.
