MO lawmaker gets threats after pushing change to deadly force law

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Missouri state representative is the subject of increased security after he received harsh letters, emails and tweets because of a bill he introduced in the Legislature.

Rep. Randy Dunn, a Democrat from Kansas City, proposed House Bill 1940 which proposes changes to the Castle Doctrine, Missouri's version of the Stand Your Ground law.

"Your legislation is intended only to protect the white trash and street n****** in their assaults, armed robberies and home invasions. It's that kind of filth that elected you to office," one person wrote to him after he introduced the legislation.

"You are a disgrace to the office you hold and the good people of Missouri should pray that your kind of thinking ends up in the growing trash heap," another person wrote to him.

It's controversy over a bill some say threatens Second Amendment rights which the author said is simply not true.

"House Bill 1940 does absolutely nothing to infringe upon a person's right to bear arms or to protect themselves or their families," Dunn said.

Dunn wrote the bill after hearing constituents in the wake of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis cases. Defendants charged in both of the Florida killings argued that Stand Your Ground, a law allowing the use of deadly force to protect yourself, applied.

Missouri's Castle Doctrine is similar in nature, but it only applies to the home. Provisions in Dunn's bill would require the defendant to retreat before shooting, to prove they had no other choice but to use deadly force and it would disallow automatic immunity from a civil lawsuit for anyone using deadly force or shooting someone.

"I'm a firm believer that you should have the right to protect your home and protect your family in the instance that someone is posing an imminent threat. All I'm doing is saying that rather than jumping to violence immediately, we should look for opportunities to resolve these issues in another manner," Dunn said.

But others disagreed and they tweeted and emailed their displeasure with Dunn and his proposed bill.

One tweet reads, "I actually feel sorry for @MORepDunn right now. He has no idea what's about to hit him."

Another references a shotgun: "I actually prefer a Remington 870 but to each his own. Ain't diversity great?"

One particular email to Dunn said, "Travon (sic) Martin got EXACTLY what he deserved. It is telling that that piece of s*** infecting the White House would say 'If I had a son, he would be like Travon.'"

Dunn said the last two remarks are what prompted him to notify capitol and Kansas City police.

"The language that has been used to describe myself as well as others including Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, that sort of language is unacceptable," Dunn said.
