JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Jones County child was killed Friday afternoon when the car she was riding in wrecked on Highway 84 in the Hebron Community. The victim has been identified as Zyla Owens, 12, of Laurel.

Officials say she died when she was thrown from a Chevy Cobalt as it left the road and hit a tree.

Attempts by several passersby to revive her were unsuccesful and she was prounounced dead at the scene.

Four other occupants, including three children, were also hurt and were transported to the hospital. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

"Anytime you get a child involved, it's a traumatic experience for all the rescuers also," said Dan McKenna, Jones County Fire Coordinator.  He was among the first responders from Jones County and the Mississippi Highway Patrol who worked the accident. 

The wreck happened just after 4:30 p.m., near Summerland Road.
