INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

People in one Independence neighborhood are still reeling from the news that a 65-year-old neighbor was found murdered inside his home.

The discovery was made Friday evening in the 800 block of South Jones Road. Police were called there after a woman came home to find her husband dead inside their home.

The man was later identified as 65-year-old Charles E. Stephens.

"Charlie was more of a friend than a neighbor," said Virgil Bybee, who can't believe his friend and next door neighbor is gone.

Bybee said most of the neighbors have lived there together 40 years. Bybee and his wife, Delores, have lived in their home in Independence for 47 years.

Bybee heard a knock at his door about 7 p.m. Friday from Stephens' wife.

"She came home and found him, in bed, and she came knocking on our door," Bybee said. "The fact that we were home, and she had a place to come, is comforting to us."

Bybee doesn't know why anyone would want to hurt his friend and hopes police arrest someone soon.

"The way I see it, they must know something about who did it, but they haven't confirmed it yet," Bybee said.

Police haven't provided any further details at this time.

Independence police say this is an ongoing investigation and are offering a $2,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest.

If anyone has information about the homicide, they are asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 or Independence PD Investigations Unit at 816-325-7330.
