LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

Police are investigating after they said a body was found near the Kansas River.

Officials said someone called for help after finding the body about 8:48 a.m. in a wooded area near Seventh and New Jersey streets near the south bank of the Kansas River and the train depot. Volunteers discovered the body while doing a neighborhood clean-up in the area.

Sgt. Trent McKinley said in a press release that their preliminary investigation indicates the person is a 44-year-old Lawrence resident.

Police didn't have many details on the death investigation, but said that homeless people tend to camp out there.

At this time, there are no signs of foul play.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
